Winter

It's difficult to get really good pictures in the winter, many plants have lost their leaves or have died down to soil level. Yet it takes one good snowfall to bring out the structure of the plants and to add another dimension yet again to the garden.
The light wasn't very good when I took this and I hope it comes out bright enough, it does on my screen. It does show why I am glad that I have squashed my natural disinclination to avoid conifers and how bare it would be without them. Winter The dogs love the Juniper, they often rub themsleves along the branches and you can smell the aromatic foliage at its best when it is bruised. However I do find that working with it makes my hands itch quite a bit if I'm not careful.
We are lucky that the gardens around us are also full of trees which has encouraged the variety of birds in the garden.
Last week we had a Firecrest, a bird apparently found in this area but not common generally.
The pond is deep enough for it not to freeze completely and we do keep the pump and waterfall running on most days, which helps the birds in winter also. In the middle of the patio is an old (5yr) Christmas tree still in the stand. Once the leaves have been pruned and the needles long since dropped it makes an excellent holder for the fat balls etc that you can hang up for the birds.
